14 days from home ownership: planting roots

I close on my new home in 14 days, and I am simultaneously overjoyed and terrified!  This is perhaps the wildest and most exciting adventure I have yet to embark on… and that’s saying a lot if you know me!  I’ve explored 18 foreign countries, I’ve moved across the country twice, and I’ve jumped out of an airplane- and yet, this is scary!

This adventure requires a different sort of adrenaline.  A smart friend once told me that there are different advantages to being a bird and being a tree.  A bird is free.  It can explore without bounds.  It never has to settle in.  Meanwhile, a tree is grounded in its roots.  It is wise.  It is solid, and it doesn’t run away.  I’m about to give this “tree” thing a try for the first time.

When I’m about to take a big step into uncharted territory, I have a habit of studying a topic until I become an expert.  My career began in the film industry, so the past 6 months have been a crash course in my real estate education.  Fortunately, I work at The Gilbert Group, which means I spend my days in an office surrounded by 5 of the best and the brightest realtors in Colorado.

Every day I come to them with questions, and thanks to them I feel unusually prepared to do something that’s WAY out of my comfort zone.

My new home is a blank slate.  It doesn’t have any grass growing in the yard, but it has a quarter of an acre worth of potential.  It has terrible, bright red “accent walls”, but that’s nothing a little paint can’t fix.  There’s junk in the crawl space, but I’m not afraid of getting my hands dirty.

My home in an investment in my future and not just financially.  A dear friend calls working on her home “deeply calming.”  She tends to her garden, she’s building a beautiful fence, and she’s preparing to welcome chickens into her family.  Who wouldn’t want a little bit of that in their life?

The Gilbert Group couldn’t have prepared me better to take this leap.  Here we go- let’s plant some roots!
